 PRESS RELEASE

NEW WORK BY BELARUS-BORN ARTIST ANYA SMOLNIKOVA SHOWS IN CONJUNCTION WITH PRODUCTION OF  ‘THE DIARY OF A MADMAN’ BY NIKOLAI GOGOL AT SEDGWICK THEATER IN MT. AIRY

PROCESSIONS: New Work by Anya Smolnikova opens alongside a Quintessence Theatre Group production of The Diary of a Madman on February 13 and will remain on view through March 10, 2013 at the Sedgwick Theater located at 7137 Germantown Avenue in Philadelphia. The opening reception will be held on Friday, February 22 from 6-8.

Much as worship is both a communal and personal practice, these pieces represent an internal form of meditation that is shared. A series of quirky chimerical collages, sharp and subtly humorous still-lives, sexually charged abstracts and experimental collages suggest a struggle between engaging in a shifting multicultural, multimedia reality, while attempting to harbor a personal inner peace and process integrity.

A Soviet by birth and Belarusian by upbringing, Anya lived in the US since 1999. She has traveled extensively through the Balkans, Middle East, and both Western and Eastern Europe. She is primarily interested in the relationship between visual arts, cultural displacement, mythology, the occult, theater, human sexuality and deep sea creatures. Anya currently lives in Boston and works with urban youth in the art room and on mural projects in the Boston area.
